Dr. Irache Ibáigar, urologist and head of the Urology Service of Don Benito-Villanueva Hospital in Extremadura, presents a relevant milestone: her center is the first public hospital of the National Health System in Spain to implement NESA technology for the treatment of urinary incontinence.
The main application focuses on patients with urinary incontinence, mostly women, whose quality of life is severely diminished by the daily use of pads, diapers or frequent clothing changes. NESA appears as an effective alternative among pharmacological treatments — with their side effects and high dropout rate — and more invasive surgical options. They also apply the treatment in cases of erectile dysfunction.
She highlights the leading role of nursing in protocol follow-up: they are the ones who manage urodynamic consultations, schedule patients, conduct evolution questionnaires and generate the trust bond essential for treatment. This also frees up the specialized medical agenda.
She points out that NESA’s benefits go beyond urology, observing improvements in respiratory capacity, sleep and gastric problems, which opens the door to its use in other hospital services. She encourages other public hospitals to follow her example.
