From a laboratory in Japan to 1,400 clinics across three continents
NESA WORLD® was born from Japanese research into bioelectricity in the 1970s. It crossed the Pacific, came close to disappearing and has since become the non-invasive neuromodulation platform for the autonomic nervous system with the widest international clinical presence.
Born in Japanese research
In the 1970s, in some of Japan’s most advanced laboratories, a group of doctors and engineers began researching how to communicate with the body through imperceptible bioelectric signals. Their aim was far from superficial: they wanted to understand which microcurrent patterns could support more precise regulation of the autonomic nervous system, the silent conductor of many of the processes that keep the body alive.
Their initial hypothesis was ambitious: if the autonomic nervous system could be modulated non-invasively, the clinical implications would extend far beyond any single symptom. A well-regulated ANS supports tissue vascularisation, promotes the body’s natural mechanisms of cellular regeneration, optimises heart rate variability (HRV) — one of the most reliable biomarkers of adaptive capacity — and helps restore the architecture of deep sleep, the state in which the body repairs, consolidates and rebuilds itself each night.
But their vision went further. These researchers were not thinking only about treating disease. They imagined a technology capable of preparing the physiological ground so that other treatments could work more effectively: a foundational intervention that would strengthen the base before anything else was built upon it. Their hope was that medicine would one day recognise it as they already did: a tool for preventive medicine, designed to help people live longer and, above all, live those years with a higher quality of life.
After years of observation, testing and technical refinement, they identified physiological frequencies (1–14 Hz), sub-sensory current levels (0.1–0.9 mA) and directionality protocols capable of interacting with the nervous system without invading it. This became the scientific foundation for everything that would follow.
A vision that crossed continents
In the late 1980s, that research evolved into an initial clinical prototype featuring 192 electrodes. Between 1987 and 1991, the system developed into a more efficient, manageable and precise architecture, laying the foundations for the NESA® non-invasive neuromodulation system as it is known today.
This was more than a technical refinement. It marked a decisive transition: the evolution from an experimental concept into a clinical tool with a clearer rationale, greater safety and improved reproducibility.
At a certain point, the research ceased to be merely a technological discovery and became a legacy. Following a division among some of the project’s key driving figures, the technology crossed continents and arrived in Spain through the son of one of its co-inventors. What travelled with him was not only the technology itself, but also the responsibility to preserve its original vision and ensure its continuity.
From 2014 onwards, the project was relaunched from Donostia–San Sebastián. There, it consolidated its scientific, clinical and regulatory foundations whilst building partnerships with leading universities, hospitals and healthcare professionals. This phase proved decisive, transforming a research legacy into a platform with an international outlook and a genuine structure for long-term growth.

The question nobody was asking
In Japan, a group of doctors and engineers began researching how to modulate the autonomic nervous system using imperceptible bioelectric signals. Their aim was to improve blood flow, heart rate variability and the quality of deep sleep. Their ultimate vision was a preventive medicine technology designed to help people live longer, healthier lives.
1987
192 electrodes, one prototype
Research crystallises into a first clinical prototype with 192 electrodes. Between 1987 and 1991, it evolves towards a more efficient and precise architecture. The foundations are laid for NESA® non-invasive neuromodulation as it is known today.
1992

Following a split among the original founders, the project crossed continents. The son of one of the co-inventors brought the technology to Spain.
2014
The legacy that crossed continents
In 2014, he relaunched the project from Donostia–San Sebastián, consolidating its scientific, clinical and regulatory foundations and building alliances with leading universities, hospitals and healthcare professionals.
2023
The conversation goes global
NESA WORLD® increased its international visibility and reaffirmed its presence in new markets. Recognition in Warsaw as one of the sector’s most innovative technologies marked a symbolic milestone: the conversation that began with bioelectricity was gaining an increasingly public and European resonance.
2024
Madrid as the epicentre
Madrid became a key meeting point. NESA WORLD® strengthened the International Congress of Non-Invasive Neuromodulation (ICNIN) and expanded its international presence through conferences, agreements, distributor engagement and new global connections.
The company was no longer simply a technology supported by clinicians; it was beginning to build a community, a conversation and a body of expertise.
2025
Structure and maturity
Expansion entered a phase of consolidation. Certifications increased, the distribution network became stronger and clinical presence continued to grow.
Growth was no longer merely geographical; it became operational, regulatory and educational. This maturity made it possible to prepare for the next leap forward without compromising rigour.
2026
Consolidation
The scale is becoming visible: more international agreements, a stronger clinical and hospital presence, broader scientific evidence and a more robust team structure are taking NESA WORLD® into a new phase of consolidation.
The initial promise is becoming a platform. The momentum is becoming a system.
Science, structure and support
Today, NESA WORLD® brings together clinical vision, training, support and international expansion. Its growth is underpinned not only by commercial agreements, but by a network of hospitals, clinics, healthcare professionals, universities, distributors and support teams that make real, sustained adoption of the technology possible. The company continues to move forward with an increasingly cross-disciplinary approach across rehabilitation, intimate health, neurology, pain management, mental health, dentistry, sports medicine, internal medicine and aesthetic medicine. But the conversation is no longer limited to these eight specialities. More and more healthcare professionals are reaching the same conclusion: the autonomic nervous system plays a central role in sleep, tissue vascularisation, inflammatory response, pain regulation, muscle recovery and each patient’s adaptive capacity. When professionals support their patients’ ANS, they help create the conditions for standard treatments to work more effectively. It is a root-cause approach: it does not compete with the speciality; it enhances it. For this reason, new specialities are adopting NESA® non-invasive neuromodulation as they place increasing importance on the autonomic nervous system in the management of underlying symptoms. This includes gastroenterology, where the gut–brain axis operates through the vagus nerve and most of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut; respiratory medicine, where vagal tone helps regulate bronchial calibre and is involved in difficult-to-control asthma; rheumatology, where the vagus nerve’s cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway modulates inflammatory responses; gynaecology, where autonomic dysregulation may exacerbate symptoms associated with menopause and endometriosis; cardiology, where low HRV is a recognised predictor of post-infarction mortality; paediatrics, where autonomic dysfunction is involved in many sleep disorders in children and adolescents; and geriatrics, where autonomic decline contributes to orthostatic hypotension, falls and loss of independence. They all share the same clinical logic: when the ANS functions better, sleep can improve, inflammation may decrease, tissue recovery is supported and the patient may respond better to intervention. NESA® is not a treatment that replaces specialist care. It is a foundational technology designed to prepare the patient for it: a root-cause approach that helps the body respond better to what each professional already knows how to do.
Science shared publicly
Since 2021, NESA WORLD® has presented the scientific evidence and clinical applications of its technology at leading international conferences. This continued presence is more than a formality: it is a way of building public credibility, encouraging clinical dialogue and supporting innovation within the healthcare community.
