José María Belló, physiotherapist at the Bello Physiotherapy Center, presents the case of Mercedes, a 40-year-old woman with Down syndrome who was going through a long-evolution insomnia and depression condition. As he explains, emotional deterioration became especially evident after the pandemic, when Mercedes began to appear dim, with less energy, difficulties expressing herself and a notable loss of the joy and participation that habitually characterized her. Faced with this situation, and after speaking with her and her mother, the team decided to incorporate NESA technology as part of the therapeutic approach.
Mercedes’ mother relates that depression had lasted approximately two and a half years, with intense symptoms such as tremors, stuttering, withdrawal and great impact on her daily life. From the treatment, very positive changes began to be observed. Among them, she highlights an evident improvement in mood, communication, participation at home and in other environments, as well as a progressive recovery of Mercedes’ habitual vitality and joy.
Both the family and the physiotherapist emphasize that the evolution was very significant and that the treatment was a before and after in her quality of life. The case reflects how a complementary approach aimed at regulating the nervous system can importantly contribute to emotional well-being, rest and daily functioning in patients with complex needs.
