Dr. Ana Paula Marum, general clinical physician with training in clinical and functional nutrition, has directed an integrative medicine clinic in Lisbon for ten years, where she works with a multidisciplinary approach alongside professionals from different areas, such as psychology, psychiatry and nutrition. In her testimony, she explains that for years she has understood the human being as a global unit, in which body, mind and nervous system are deeply connected. Therefore, the incorporation of non-invasive neuromodulation with NESA has seemed to her a coherent evolution within her clinical practice.
As she relates, this technology has allowed them to expand the scope of treatments they already applied in consultation, especially in cases where they perceived that there was a block in patient response despite using other therapeutic tools. In her experience, NESA is providing especially positive results in people with systemic pain, anxiety and sleep alterations, areas in which the dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system can have a very important role and limit clinical evolution.
Dr. Marum emphasizes that, when that neurovegetative component is not integrated within the treatment, many medical or complementary strategies can fall short. Therefore, she considers that non-invasive neuromodulation represents a tool of great value to enhance the effect of other interventions and advance toward more global, integrative and effective care. From her perspective, NESA does not replace other therapies, but reinforces them and helps to go further in improving the patient’s quality of life.
